Holiday Activities in Indianapolis
December is a month that always seems to sneak up on people, but what a great month to have surprise you. It embodies the true meaning of holiday spirit and it is hard not to smile when stores, homes, and streets are adorned with holiday decorations. Another way to revive that holiday cheer is to entertain yourself, your family, and friends with holiday activities. Below we have suggested a few fun activities for anyone to enjoy around the Indianapolis area.
Holiday activities for All
One of my favorite things to do during the holidays is to venture downtown to Monument Circle to see Indianapolis’ own version of a Christmas tree. If you have never made a trip to see the monument all lit up, I highly suggest it. On the circle, you can pop into the South Bend Chocolate Company to grab some tasty treats and walk on over to Starbucks to warm up with some coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. After warming up with your hot beverage in tow, you can grab a horse and carriage ride to “clip clop” around for a tour of the city or take to your next destination. Whatever you do and wherever you go, downtown Indianapolis is an easy way to engage in activities to get you and others in the holiday spirit.
Each year the Hilbert Circle Theatre (also located on Monument Circle) hosts the Duke Energy ‘Yuletide Celebration’. The show features the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra with 26 different performances. There is nothing like some holiday songs to put you in the spirit!
Children’s Holiday Activities
In December, Indianapolis doesn’t always get adequate snow in order to break out the trusty old sleds. Whether it snows or not, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis hosts Jolly Days Winter Wonderland from now until January 10th. I went numerous times as a child and have also gone in recent years and the Children’s Museum knows how to create a magical winter wonderland. Kids can “sled” down the giant snow slide that is built on top of the infamous curved staircase and then make their way on over to the Winter Wonderland that is full of igloos, caroling with Frosty the Snowman, and numerous other winter filled activities.
As a kid, my grade school took trips to Conner Prairie to learn about how the pilgrims lived, learned, and worked back in the day. However, during the holidays, Conner Prairie has the Gingerbread Village on display from now until January 3rd. Here, kids can check out the 35 plus gingerbread creations, make crafts, listen to stories, and more.
